The Whidbey Writers MFA Alumni Association presents the 2014 Emerging Writers Getaway Contest for unpublished authors of novel length crime fiction.

 Contest Schedule 2014 

   • Open for submissions: February 14, 2014
   • Close submissions: May 23, 2014
   • Selection of finalists: June 27, 2014
   • Announce winner: August 8, 2014

Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author of legal thrillers The Jury Master, Wrongful Death, Bodily Harm, Murder One, Damage Control, and The Conviction, will read the finalists’ entries and select the first, second and third place winners.

Laurie McLean

Laurie McLean

Laurie McLean, Partner in Foreword Literary, Inc. will review the winning entry for possible representation or referral, and will review and comment on second and third place winners’ synopses.

The names and novel titles of the finalists will be posted on the Whidbey Writers MFA Alumni Association website on June 30, 2014.

Awards are:

First Place

  • Five-day residency at NILA MFA residency (includes tuition and lodging, valued at $1,140* – transportation and meals not provided)
  • Laurie McLean, Partner, Foreword Literary Inc. provides a full read/critique (as well as consideration for possible representation or referral) on the submission
  • $300 cash prize
  • Name of winner, posted on the Whidbey Writers Workshop MFA Alumni Association website

* The five-day residency at the NILA MFA residency is nonredeemable for cash, is nontransferable, and expires after one year:  It must be used in either January or August, 2015.

Second Place

  • Receives agent’s comments and/or suggestions from Laurie McLean of Foreword Literary Inc. on his/her synopsis
  • $200 cash prize
  • Name/title of work posted on the Whidbey Writers Workshop MFA Alumni Association website

Third Place

  • Receives agent’s comments and/or suggestions from Laurie McLean of Foreword Literary Inc. on his/her synopsis
  • $100 cash prize
  • Name and title of work posted on the Whidbey Writers Workshop MFA Alumni Association website
